Next Project: DML 6311 Elefant vs. DML 9061 Jagdpanzer IV L/70 'Johann Huber'

As I'm at completing the Sturer Emil project I'm planning the next. I was initially going to build the jagdpanzer but after reading the book -Combat History of German Heavy Anti-Tank Unit 653- by Karlheinz Munch I got hooked on the Elefant. Now I can't decide and you'll have to help me.

The Elefant is going to be OOTB apart from Friul tracks (oh and I forgot ATAK zimmerit ).


The jagdpanzer will have some PE added from Aber and Friuls tracks aswell.

Maybe that's because they weren't very good ! Cool looking vehicle but poor design. Got taken totally taken apart at Kursk.

How was it taken totally apart? Not according to the Karlheinz book...Combat History of the Panzerjager Abtielung 653 book...most were lost due to mechanical problems, I'll grant you it was a poor design mechanically.

They were not used tactically sound at Kursk either. Good armor and gun with poor mechanical reliability, sounds like a few British designs to me....heheheh :>}}.

My understanding(which could well be wrong) is that the Elephants suffered heavily from attacks by infantry due to the lack of any MG's on the tanks. Russian soldiers only had to wait for the tank to pass then plant charges on them. I believe most were knocked out that way. Had they fitted a coupe of MG's then it could have been very different.

That aside I reckon the Jadgpanzer has lots more scope when it comes to modelling.

In Munch's book a veteran describes how an Ferdinand located a couple hundred meters from his own vehicle is surprised by enemy infantry in the dawn. This only occured because friendly infantry had withdrawn during night without notifying the ferdinand unit. The Ferdinand did not have any MGs mounted but a front bow MG was fitted later on. I think the any panzer would run into to trouble without infantry support. From Munch's book it seems that most vehicles was immobilized due to either mines or mechanical issues. Another problem was the underpowered engines. When Borgward IV's had cleared a trail through mined areas the Ferdinand/Elefant was to slow to make it through before enemy artillery had covered the cleared trail.
