This 1/35th scale model kit is a miniature meant to portray an early development in German armour. In 1937, Henschel was asked to design a chassis for a 30 ton tank. Three trial hulls were made by Krupp and sent to Henschel to assemble in 1940. Out of 8 ordered after trials only 4 "production" vehicles were assembled by 1942. The turret had a 7.5 cm Kw.K L/24 main gun and a co-axial MG.
As I am very interested in the beginnings and development of tanks per-se, this is a welcome release. I got mine sent out from Rainbow Ten in Japan. My initial excitement was dulled somewhat once I saw the vinyl strap treads and also when I began to put some of the parts together. While the first impression of a well packaged kit closer examination betrayed to my eyes that there was probably going to be a fair amount of clean-up on some of the parts. I'll try to go step by step when I can find some time.
The box opened. Each sprue has it's own plastic bag. The packaging is smart with the hull parts seperate in their own little cardboard partition. Besides the usual decal sheet and instruction booklet there is a coloured painting guide included.
2 trees for wheel parts
The fenders come as one part
there are some clear parts
Turret parts
another tree
hull parts

the vinyl tracks. Is there any aftermarket tracks that would fit?
compared with some drawings in Panzertracts the wheels appear to be pretty accurate in size.
as is the width of the tracks.
Some problems began to surface once I detached the drive wheel parts. It seems there is quite a bit of flash to deal with on the spoked half, and some of it quite thick. This needs to be trimmed for a proper profile.
There also is a step that I don't believe is meant to be there, an artifact from the mold.
You can see the unevenness of the drive wheel hub on the spoked side!
This is the messy seam that is a result, major work with an X-acto blade is in order.
Some good news, the tracks fit.

Nice. Glad to see you give a Bugler kit a go as I love your work and am always envious of your talent .
As for the tracks and sprockets Hobby Boss has a set "Pz.sfl.V/VK-" that is link to link and has replacement sprockets. Cost is low so that it is a logical rout to take .
Good luck and happy xmas

Well thanks for that Coops, all the best in the new year.
I looked those up on LuckyModel and they have them, only they also describe them as also being for the Pz.Sfl.V Sturer Emil. I have several replacements sets for that kit- maybe I'll just use one of those- now I got to dig through all my stuff to find them!

It looks like Sturer Emil´s tracks. There are many different alternatives for Emil´s tracks.
Yep- with Coops input that was determined yesterday thanks though.
I have a set of ModelKasten ones I may use- I have a set of Friulmodel as well but I think those will go on the Pz.Sfl. fuer 12.8 cm K40.

Just to clear it up for everyone the the VK3001 running gear was used [along with lots of other bits] to build the two Emil´s so they have to be inter-changeable .
MK track review @ PMMS
All the tracks and other bits for the Emil's
Like James, I to am extremely interested in all early developmental German armor [that stops with the initial Tiger I's ] and this kit, with Jame's build, are on my list of things for early this year [after I get done with that monster S-100 boat kit, it's hugh ].

Was yours broken when you got yours- I read other people's reviews of the packaging- not good apparently.
I have a question though about that step on the sprocket wheels radiating from the center hub to the sprocket wheel- should that be sanded flat?
I only saw this pic of ne and it is not clear enough to say.

James, it could be that one was one wasn't .
The one at the Russian tank park shows that the "arms" radiating out from the hub to the sprockets are flush.
The photo with the Emil stopped beside a motor bike in Russia looks like the midday sun's shadow has the arms ending above the sprocket like the kit's (could have been just the one hub that had been machined 10mm to deep).
I don't have the photo [KIA when I lost that external hard drive] and all this is from a fast fading memory and degenerating eye sighted person.
My boat is fine, nothing busted but it has been poorly researched requiring a lot of work. I'm thinking of sticking a "quad 20" on the back.
