Cool M-10 'Duckbill' - 773rd Tank Destroyer - Ardennes

Way back when, when building my Lee, which approaches doneness, I picked up Academy's M-10 Duckbill, because it has the engine I needed for my Lee, which would be easily viewable from deck, as opposed to the M-10, unless it had the deck opened.

After spending about a year on the Lee, I needed a break, so I picked up the M-10, whose box was still nearby, and began throwing it together. Again, I'd planned to do it OOB, and again, that didn't happen. I was going to do it, also, as a Lend-Lease Soviet vehicle, but there is no record of the Soviets getting duckbills that I could find. Then I though, maybe, Polish, cuz they've got those camo paint jobs, but again, no duckbills. Then I ran across this td from the 773rd. Nice paint job, plus a little modification. Fun. I decided to mod it old school, no aftermarket, but I broke down and got a barrel, cuz in sanding the plastic barrel smooth, I tapered the end.

I didn't do a lot of detailing of the interior. I planned to, but after taking a close through the ports and with tanks gonna be standing in them, I decided it was an awful lot of work for nothing.

One of the things that was bothering me was how to paint with an air brush and get everything at the angles that can be seen. If I installed everything first, then I wold have areas with no paint. If I painted it outside the hull, how would I stick the canteens and lights in the interior. I hit on using very thin sheets which I'll glue to the hull. Of course, now that I'm not super detailing, it probably doesn't matter as much.

Notice the old style road wheel in the middle bogie, just to make things different.

I built the grouser rack from scratch. I built up the "eyebrows" on the mantlet. Stuck in a pipe whose purpose I don't know, removed the horn, thinned the brush guards, cut and thinned the fenders, fixed the angles of the doors, removed the molded in seam and created a new with with sprue, made periscope covers out of lead foil (which you can't see here).

The barrel is from Barrel Depot.

I similarly detailed the turret. I created new attachment straps and bolts for the counter weight. I moved the cover spikes. I drilled a hole through for the sighting scope. I added levers for the turret breaks? I detailed the crank for turning the turret. I added a compass? thing. And I took out the existing 50 cal. mounting point and put in a new one from the Academy U.S. machine gun kit.

So I built the .50 cal machine gun from Academy, which is a model by itself, and looks quite nice. Yes, it's not scratched, but I have a set of U.S. machine guns, so why not? Also threw on stowage from a couple of kits, including the Duckbill. I put the tacks on just for the pictures. Looks like I need to add some weight to get the wheels to sit right. I need to add some straps, and some bars inside the turret for the straps to hang on to.

BTW, I dropped the M-10 this evening. Luckily, nothing broke. Just knocked some glued items loose.
