s.Pz.Abt. 505 (Tiger II Bef.Wg. "I")

Hola Planateers!

New project I've been working hard on:

I will be working off this photo provided to me by Anthony.

My thanks to Anthony Andrew, Lawrence, Paul, Sam, and the rest of my e-mates for the technical guidance throughout.

Part #1

Well, first off, let me say that in my opinion, this kit falls short of my expectations. The pre zimmerit kits, I thought, would be an interesting way to get the effect without the work, but as they say, there are no free lunches.

Work started in the usual way, cleaning, test fitting, the suspension, and such.

I have the old Ordnance Models interior for the King Tiger, so I used it, This interior is now marketed by TWS is intended for the Tamiya kit and is actually based on the prototype, but it works.

Dry runs with the Hull and turret revealed several areas that would have to be dealt with later on:

Here the weld seem can be seen as it sits proud of the zimmerit pattern, this problem also exsist on the rear plate.

Here the Hull MG with the same problem,

and again at the exhaust armored covers.

Other areas were the zimmerit caused problems were the turret spare track hangers, jack block, AM fenders, ect...

The Griffon PE set and barrel, along with an Aber radio set, and Tasca antenna set will be used to affect the change over to Befehlswagen.

Here is the interior dry fit.

Some of the work done to the turret.

Part #2

Here is a little run of what things look like mocked up.

I completed the hull interior so I could close it up before doing the hull work.

Per the original the right side ammunition storage was removed and a GG400 generator was scratch built and installed. A rotary switch was taken from a 251/6 kit and installed along with it.

The hull Fu.8 was also sourced from the 251/6 kit.

Ammunition racks were built from brass and AFV club rounds were used.

Looking pretty nice Dave- your getting a real education on the inner workings of the Tiger II!
Are you getting one of the Trumpeter 1/16th scale ones?
The weathering on the floor looks pretty authentic. One thing is I would paint the leather on the seats black- they didn't use brown very much and the synthetic stuff was black.

Marco, Thanks, lovin that LWS by the way!

Sammy, you bet in weighs in, I was surprised the first time I lifted her up all dressed.

James, Thanks, little things like that will keep me in the minors, knew it and screwed it, the turret seats are black. next time.

Evan, the zimm misses the point I think but it can be worked with.

Part #3

And moving right along.

Overall shot of the rollin' hull.

Followed by a walk around.

On the back side the Mission Models Micro chisel with a new blade removed zimmerit to allow the exhaust covers to sit properly, this was also the cure for the jack block and other places such as the cable mounts on the sides.
I should have done this for the hull MG but I did not.

Some additional Befehls gear in the back.

Sans fenders.

And tomorrow will begin tiding up the turret.

Wow, you're going fast
I like the result. A pity that the interior is not a copy of a series vehicle (or did I misunderstand this?), because it looks very well detailled, at least better than the Verlinden KT interior.

Edit: Which color did you use for the ammo rounds?
