Sd.kfz. 181 Late Tiger SS-Pz.Abt. 101

Sd.kfz. 181 Late Tiger SS-Pz.Abt. 101 Normandy 1944.

Here is my latest project. The base kit used is AFV’s Wittman tiger kit. Photo etch is from Aber, with Frui tracks and Zimmerit from Atak. I added Minicraft’s interior too. I started this project back in the summer of 2006, and it has been sitting on the shelf for some time. I began work on it again and construction is almost complete. It will be painted to represent one of the tanks in the Second Company; maybe #221 or #222.

Looks excellent Nicholas.. I built this kit a while ago (the standard kit AFV35079 not the Wittman special) also with the Atak zim. The only real problem I had was with the kit's escape hatch, which was slightly too small and the Atak hatch, being an exact copy, was also too small. Was this corrected with the Wittman kit?

Very nice! I'm unfamiliar with the minicraft interior, what is it like and how does it stack up against Verlinden and CMK?

I think 222 is out of the running for markings, as that one has a binocular sight, and the insignia is painted directly on the zim, not on a cutout.

Nice Tiger Nicholas,

I've nearly completed the AFV 'Late' Version with metal Zim, must say that ATAK stuff looks a lot better

Thanks Evan, I made a mistake, it used Academy's interior set from their Mid-Version Tiger. It wasnt that great, details are either lacking or poorly represented, but in the end, it was cheaper than buying a resin set by verlinden or any other resin kit.

I decided to model Tiger #213

Thanks also to Flak, Dazzler, dsleigh, and vanhall.

I dont think it was, I might leave the hatch open to show the turret's interior, so that might solve the size issue.

Quick update tonight. I sprayed the base coat; it is my usual Tamiya Dark Yellow mix, which consists of Tamiya Dark yellow, mixed with white and yellow. I decided that this Tiger will be #213 commanded by SS-Hauptscharführer Höflinger, who witnessed the destruction of Tiger 007 and the death of Michael Wittmann on August 8, 1944.

What is next? I may do some dark and light shading of the Dark Yellow mix, before adding camo.
