A new StuG at Bovington.

Hi guys. I received this email yesterday and thought I would share it with you.

"On Friday last the Sd.Kfz. Foundation presented their beautifully restored
Sturmgeschuetz in Bovington. Ten years ago the remains of this
Sturmgeschuetz were recovered from a freighter that had been sunk in the
Black Sea. The Foundation have done an amazing job in restoring it to the
condition it was in when loaded on that ship in November 1943.

While there are many Sturmgeschuetze around the World today only three
assembled by MIAG are known to have survived including this one. This is the
only fully restored one. Many differences in construction and detail when
compared to Alkett vehicles were found during research for this project.

After various drives around the Bovington arena the Sturmgeschuetz was
joined by the Bovington Tiger Ausf.E and Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf.L giving
a nice opportunity to compare (within the limits of digital photography) a
plain Dunkelgelb vehicle with two that have been restored with original 1941

Except of course the 13 MIAG StuGs we have here in Finland...

Otherwise very interesting to se a MIAG vehicle with the Saukopf mantlet. Is this really the original configuration?

Apparently it is the original configuration or so I've been told and Tom Jentz claims maximum authenticity "as from the assembly line".

Are "your StuGs" fully restored ? I find it weird Doyle has forgotten them when counting the survivors ... or were they modified by the Finn nish Army ?

Hi Laurent,

Is that StuG the one that after recovery was displayed in one Polish museum for some time around 2003?
It had the front armor plate over transmission broken, not by explosion but rather caused by some sort of damages done during the transport ship sinking.
The roof was missing and IIRC the powerplant too.

Says H.L.Doyle :
"I do not know for certain the route taken after the StuG was recovered. I
understood that they salvaged it to the Ukraine where some initial clean up
was done to take all the encrusted sea creatures off. I never heard about it
going to Poland. A lousy camouflage job and lots of Balkankreuz were added.
Externally the Wanne, gun etc looked OK but really the condition was awful,
the roof was lost and the belly plate was split from end to end, the glacis
plate was bent in, all sheet metal parts had rotted away. Inside all the
alloy parts had disappeared - so for example the gearbox was just a set of
gears and shafts stuck together with corrosion.

Concerning the damage, some was caused when the ship was torpedoed and late
during submarine hunt depth charges set of the cargo of munitions. Then of
course damage was done when the StuG was pulled 15m to the surface.

Some of the MIAG StuGs here in Finland are runners, but they are not "fully restored" like the one in the Littlefield or Sd.Kfz. Foundation -collections. I.e. restored in- and outside, painted and equipped to Finnish specs, but often lacking some in- our outside equipment.
Most of the other ones (the non-runners) are typical museum exhibits, repainted on the outside, but often quite empty on the inside.

Heck yes! They served on until 1966... But modified or not, they still are manufactured at the MIAG plant.

Andreas, please do not think I take it what you say is wrong but when asked about that here's what Doyle answered :

"Most of the Finnish StuG were Alkett so at the moment the statement "only
three (MIAG) are known at this time" is correct."

And Jentz (answering to my question "weren't the finnish StuGs MIAG ?" :

"weren’t the Finnish StuGs also MIAGs ? I’ve been told of 13 of them ? Yes, some of them and the rest Alkett."

Hmmmm ... beeing a total ignorant on this topic (among may others) I just have to pass the answers ... don't shoot me.

Apparently Jentz and doyle do not agree about these StuGs.
Sounds like my old pal Hilary could be wrong, uh ?
No big deal.
He'll be forgiven won't he ?

The I guess according to the Fgst Nr you are able to trace down each survivor.
So each one of the survivors is MIAG ?
