Question German tank destroyer badges...

Hi all. This is my first post here on the Planet. Concerning the Tank Destroyer badges issued to German troops. I know the badge was issued to individual infantry soldiers for the appropriate accomplishments, but what about AFV crews? Would the badge have been issued to the entire crew or just the commander of the vehicle?

Thanks,
Jody.

hi jody ... welcome to the planet!

to answer your question: neither nor! the tank destroyer badge was an individual award to those who managed to destroy a tank in close combat and that was not bound to the crew ... i.e. if the r.o. of a tank got an award it was issued to him and no one else ...

Thanks Laura. Seems a bit unfair to the rest of the crew I think.

Hi Jody,

the reward was awarded to anyone who single handedly destroyed a tank. Which means that if anyone of the crew wanted this award. He would have to get out of the tank grab himself a panzerfaust or a mine or grenade or anything else, and then destroy a enemy tank.

Oh and by the way, welcome to PA

Hmm now I am confused. I have a photo of Lieutenant Colonel Franz Bake, commander of Panzer regiment 11 with three of these badges on his sleeve. My reference states that even though it was intended for infantry that many members of the tank corps received. Also in 1943 a special decoration with a gold band was awarded after the fifth score.

Hi Jody,

Franz Bäke actually did destroy three T-34 single handedly. Oh and by the way he was a dentist

And it was definetly only awarded to someone who destroyed a tank single handedly. The germans were very strict with their regulations (and still are).

Thank you so much for clearing that up for me. Now I know not to put these badges on AFV figs. Thank you also for the link on Bake. Very interesting. Looks like I definitely came to the right place with my question.

Jody.
