Close Combat - Matrix games

Larry,

It has changed hands over the years as the different games were released.

http://www.matrixgames.com/games/game.asp?gid=335

There are a couple of web sites that discuss the development (and all of the old games... it was thought to be released before Christmas - but I dunno. You can buy it in the box or as a pure down load.

I always dug this more than the First Person Shooters.. as this has so much going on. It's a micro managers dream

Thanks Laz and Siim for the juice on on-line game play.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the responce. Is is a strategy game? and I'm confused as I looked at the other strategy game suggested by Plushy, is it also an action game? like a first perso shooter? or what. I never got into the strategy games so they are new to me.

Thumbs up Small unit tactics, Baby!

These bad boys are more fun than the law allows (IMHO)!

Basic units are squads, fire teams (half squads), gun/crews, and AVFs and tracks.

Basic set up - see the map boards - are pick a side, and play individual games or the campaigns... First scenario (for example) would be the kick off of Barbarossa. From memory, as the attacking Germans, you would have four to five squads, a heavy machine gun team, a couple of light tanks and a half track. Following the "off screen" artillery's barrage, you would advance your forces against Russian troops in prepared trenches - most would be unseen until they move or begin firing.

You are manuevering (from an over head view) the squads and vehicles - to the best of their ability and level of training. I'll try and find some screen shots of a battle in progress - there are no "turns", it plays out until either the victory conditions (or defeat) are met.

Very cool graphics - well rendered little soldats crawling, running, firing with coments in either accented english or Russian and German. Tanks and crewed guns traverse and engage, and most vehicles have very realistic/reasonable portrayals of strengths and weaknesses.

Besides this version there are D-Day, Bulge, and Arnhem stand alones.

I Highly endorse it.

The Close Combat series is on my all-time fav list and I am glad they are re-doing it. I remember moving a company of Panthers along the raised roads in Arnhem and knocking out the Allied tanks on either side. Real good fun
