The PE Fret has front fender hinges to replace the molded-in standard versions.

I made the hinge pins from 34 gauge annealed steel wire (left). Getting started on the gun (right).

First gun build phase primed and painted and more parts going on. I'm going to do this in stages and paint as I go. This is a fairly complex assembly.

Gun on hull. I made a slot-and-bar modification so it wouldn't fall off the model. The way Dragon designed the kit, it would have to be otherwise glued in place, especially with the weight of the metal barrel. I figure with this level of detail and effor, the gun should pivot!!

Great start Andy. I've got one of these as well and all i've done so far is look at it. I also got the new AFV Club Nashorn but i've at least got the running gear installed on it.

Just too many I want to build.

Thanks!

I made some more progress towards the end of last week and over the weekend.

I finished adding the detail to the gun (these photos don't show the sight).

With the base of dunkelgelb. I had a heck of a time with the sight. It was supposed to attach to the left pivot shaft of the gun (trunion?), but the pin was too short and small to accomplish a mechanically-sound glue joint. I had to drill out the pin and insert a steel shirtpin just to get the thing attached.

The PE side vents were actually less difficult. I had trouble keeping the vanes straight and there's some glue cleanup to do, but I plan to make them look decent by the time I'm done. The filler is from a little over-zealous filing.

By the way, on the subject of fillers, I've started using automotive spot putty. I find that it is much smoother and gives a little more work time than Squadron putty. That lets me get it on and smooth in a thinner layer and get to sanding it smooth sooner. Part of the problem is probably that my Squadron putty is getting a little old, but then again, I don't recall it ever working as nicely as this spot putty.

It's a little rough around the edges and not as clean a build as I would like, but it is coming along.

As the first Dragon kit I've carried through this far and being a long time Tamiya junkie, I can definitely say that Dragon kits are not as easy to build, particular from the standpoint of complexity (a good thing), cleanup (not so good) and fit (not as good as Tamiya). They are definitely not for beginners! In Dragon's favor, however, the inclusion of so much PE, other detail-enhancing aspects and their incredible variety of interesting subjects makes them a must-have for me in my kit stash and model collection.

As always, comments and questions are welcome!

Thanks for checking in.

Thanks, guys!

I got the tracks built-up and some of the fighting compartment built.

The tracks are in two sections so they could be removed for painting. The top section curves around the idler and sprocket and the bottom section comprises the flat portion and the curves under the sprockets and idlers. You can see where I have Tamiya tape to hold them in place.

I masked the engine grilles so they could be primed separately.

Over the last few sessions, I've been working on the minute details of the upper hull.

Thanks for checking in!
