Lawrence:

Today tha postman brought a book that may be of interest to you: "Panthers and Tigers at Kursk 1943" (well, "Pantery i Tygrysy na Luka Kurskim 1943"). I haven't had a chance to go through it carefully yet, but there are several pictures that seem to meet your needs (though they may have also appeared somewhere else - for instance this book has the same picture that you posted at the start of the thread). It also has some 1/35 line drawings that would probably fit your needs. There are a couple of interesting pictures of Panther 632 from the 6th company 52 Panzer Abteilung that has what most surely is a bench on the engine deck just forward of the pair of boxes (almost like a park bench). If you would like scans or more info, just let me know.

The book sounds interesting. What language is it in? Does it have english text?

The only photo I have of 632 is the one below. Would you mind sharing the photos you have? Thanks

Here is another Ausf D with the rear stowage boxes

Another view of 232

Lwrence:

I apologize, but I am just swamped right now. Here are some brief remarks... The book is a Wydawnictwo Militaria volume (205) and it is fully bilingual (two columns - one Polish(?) and one English, with bilingual captions). It purports to be written chiefly from Soviet sources, but gives a reasonable presentation of the performance of Panthers (and Tigers) both during the German offensive and subsequent Soviet offensive. It contains two photos of 632 (one of which you already have, neither shows the starboard side to know if the box is mounted on the upper hull there - one of your requirements). I would suspect that most of the photos of operational vehicles (i.e., German photos) have already appeared elsewhere (though my reference materials are so narrow that I can't say this for certain). What is probably little known are the many photos of Soviet soldiers climbing over and posing with knocked out Panthers (of course, all the external equipment is almost always missing on these typers of photos). As I mentioned, there are numerous 1:35 scale drawings of Panthers with the boxes on the engine decks and one profile showing the box mounted on the upper hull (though no top view). I can't comment on the Tiger portion of the book, as I am still reading through the Panther portion (about 2/3 of the book is devoted to Panthers at Kursk). In the next couple of days, I will post a scan of the additional photo of 632. I hope that this will tide you over.

Thanks for the information. Sounds like a great book. I am going to have to get the book. I am reading another Militaria book no 239 "Panther in Action 1943-45" and it has a very good read.

Take your time on the scans. I have yet to start on the Panther but it will be soon.
