Can anyone help me out with USMC M4A1 color at Cape Glouchester? From the photos Iíve seen paint appears to be a single color, presumably OD. Is it correct?

Any help is welcome,

Angelo Scorza

Hi Angelo,

My father served in one of these M4A1's during the Cape Glouchester campaign. The vehicles were OD with splotches of black for camouflage.

Here is a color photo of the tanks right after the campaign.

All the best,

David

PS: When small white numbers on the turret quarter faces and hull rear were added? During the battle?

The small white numbers, painted on all four corners of the turret were put on by the Marines prior to the landings on CG. They also painted this number on the engine access doors on the lower rear hull.

The larger white numbers crudely painted on the tanks, were added after the tanks were given back to the Army, probably for accounting or shipping.

My book on USMC Shermans is still in the works. It will be released by hardcorpsmodels.com instead of Letterman Publications. It has taken a long time to finish, but I feel it will be worth the wait.

Hi Angelo,

Here is another shot of my dad's tank company on CG. You can see the markings repeated on the engine access doors.
