"By the Volga" – A Stalingrad Vignette

Hello everyone!

Many of you remember this base. It’s the one I used for my “making water" thread.

Well, I was looking at it this weekend and thought of doing something with it. I thought about it and in the end settle for a small scene on one of the canals of the river Volga at Stalingrad. I was thinking of placing one or two Soviet figures on it, but I haven’t figured it out yet. So while I come up with something I will first show you how I built the base.

The base is fairly small ( about 5” X 3 ˝”). I got it at a trophy shop.

The first thing was to do a masking to protect the edges.

I then cut a piece of high density insulation Styrofoam and place it so this would be the raised part of the canal.

Next, using a section of plaster blocks I made the canal walls. For more details on how to make your own blocks like these check out the Idea Factory on the Tips and Tricks threads.

Here it is with the walls trimmed off. I placed a piece of cardboard on top of the Styrofoam to raise it to the proper height.

The next step was to make the top pavement of the canal. For this I cast some plaster sidewalk parts. (Thanks to Driver for sculpting the masters).I trimmed each section and placed them one at a time.

Now the pavement was done and the base is ready for painting.

Until next time.

Dave

Now that's nifty! You know, some of that casting of plaster might come in hand for...lets say, a Pz IV in North Africa near some ruins....

Seriously, love watching you and your tricks...always interesting, always top notch.

Thanks Rick!

I like the idea of the North African ruins. I had an idea for a diorama of some Italian troops near some ruins in Africa and some vehicles (maybe a cargo truck). The troops lifting something like an Obelisk and placing it on a truck. Kind of a unique war trophy Maybe I will have time someday for something like that.

Ah thanks Rick, you beat me to it

I was thinking of either two Soviet soldier talking by the canal (not too much action there) or maybe a soldier taking cover by some debris and returning fire. Maybe place some empty oil barrels or some crates. There is not much space but we will see. Any other ideas are welcome.
