I believe that the spades on the gun trails were flush against the back of the cargo bed. Also, there was a sizeable tree limb wedged under the wheels of the gun carriage to keep it from rolling off...

Thanks Lawrence, those are super photos! That seems to be a very carefully applied whitewash. In fact, it almost looks sprayed on - I don't really notice brush/broom marks or see the grey paint...
