Jagdpanzer IV./L70 - Tamiya

Started the Tamiya Jagdpanzer IV this weekend. Seems to be a nice, clean build (as expected from Tamiya) and to make life more difficult, I ordered an Eduard upgrade and Schürzen set which is yet to be delivered.
Small progress this weekend, lower hull details. Amazing weld seams, and casting texture and 100% perfect fit. I am just shocked. Positively, of course.

Jack Block

Not much of a progress. Rear wall is almost ready, some PE chains missing. I made a balsa jack-block instead of the kit one.

Upper parts

Upper half test-fit shows two things: the lovely shape of this vehicle :) and the perfect fit of Tamiya parts.

Also started to clear up the rear-deck. Cutting and filling to enable the PE parts to fit...

Wonderful work and good pictures :-)

Friulisation

My first ever Friul track assembled and test-fit. It sits perfectly and looks like after the first try:

Looked a bit too tight (though wartime photos show this kind of tight tracks sometimes) so I added one more link. Now it's much better:

Now continuing on the other side and the tools upgrade on the rear deck... After years of pause in modelling I'm surprised on my speed. ;)

cheers

Shape

Now she starts to look like a naked Jagdpanzer IV...

A great kit and some new found enthusiasm are powerful motivators...

Press on!

Whats up with all the filler on the engine deck? Is this where the tools go? Looking good and Friul tracks are sooo nice.

Thanks for kind words, guys!
Yes, the fillers are for the holes for the original tools. I'll upgrade them with some PE and there is no need for the holes anymore. Currently working on the Schürzen and then the tools - I hope to reach the "primer phase" this year.

That's what I thought. I too have this kit and will probably do the same thing when (and more importantly IF) I ever get to it. I like the looks of the Jagdpanzer L/70. I have a few of the Dragon ones as well.

Well, not much to see... Practically no time for modelling in the last month. Small PE upgrades. A lot more to come.

Started camo...

The camo green is sprayed on. I used Gunze H405 and just had some nostalgic feeling about Gunze paints. So smooth and nice finish, no problem with clogging (Vallejo, Mig does clog at least for me) and best choice for fine lines (I think I'll paint my 1/72 Tiger I with this, too. Once I get to assemble that little cat). Not 100% satisfied with the pattern but will correct it with the brown - it was a hard decision what camo to paint. Finally I just thought that as no specific unit or no specific vehicle is modelled, why not try some imaginary camo pattern? I hope will turn out nicely. With these two colors on I just wonder how well this pattern breaks the silhouette of the Jagdpanzer IV. http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/p...D5776B05B9.jpg

Weekend progress:

No real painting happened. But started to clear up some figures and played with possible ammo patterns...

Weathering...

Started weathering. Various products. Random method. Dusty look. :)

MZsolt 04-21-2017 07:37 AM

Finished...

The upper plate is not glued yet - I plan to include figures there so the periscope tube ending is not glued on. Also noticed that I forgot to paint the steel return rollers to some shiny metal finis. The tracks are quite OK but more dust and weathering will be applied later on the lower parts. As soon as I decide about the diorama settings these final-final steps will be made.
Overall I am pleased. I finished in time. The result is pleasing if I look at it. Subtle weathering - I don't want to hide any nice details. The Friul was a waste of money and time. It is beautiful but it is not visible because of the Schürzen. One of them is intentionally missing to show up at least a section of the track... This was a fast and pleasing build and made me motivated about modelling again.

Photobucket...

... and bang, Photobucket thinks I'm able and willing to pay USD400 per year for their 3rd party hosting service. No. Not.
Regarding my pictures I am looking for the solution...

amba 07-04-2017 01:36 PM

Hi Zsolt,

many members here have the same problem:(

Check out what Mike Walsh did:

Pictures from imgur

Hi Amba,
Yes, I saw some alternative ways (on Armorama there is a topic for PhotoBucket). I've started an imgur account and uploaded some pictures there. Here are the final photos of the Pz IV L/70 to be remembered :)
Btw, I'm afraid that on one day imgur will also apply same payment rules, as Photobucket did... maybe an own homepage would be a solution?
cheers,
Zsolt
